ADVERTISING CLEARED

16/04/08 - ASA says Camwatch has no case to answer

Camwatch has been cleared of any wrong doing by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in relation to its recent advertising campaign that highlighted the potential risks of employing on-site guards.

The first advert headlined “Are you paying £50k pa for this?” and the second advert headlined “Who else is paying your guard?”

Whilst it was acknowledged that all security operatives are now required to be licensed by the SIA, Camwatch’s argument was upheld that the present system allows licenses to be granted to those who had previously committed a significant criminal offence. Therefore, it was upheld that there was a continued risk of site crime arising from the employment of dishonest security guards.

It was concluded that the adverts were not misleading. Instead they demonstrated the potential risks of employing on-site guards – a risk that could be minimized through the introduction of a remote monitored CCTV system.
